The development of long length, uniform, and mechanically robust multifilamentary MgB2 wires has been the main R&D activity on superconducting materials within ASG Superconductors of the past few years. Matching the stringent requests of magnets and cables application is a necessity for industrial scale wire manufacturing, not only in terms of wire electrical performance but also regarding all other aspects of superconducting wires. ASG has introduced a severe quality assurance and quality inspection process that has allowed the manufacturing of multi-km long MgB2 wires through a reliable process, suitable both for manufacturing oh high current cables, as well as superconducting magnets. Increasing billet size allows production of about 13 km of wire length consistently. Critical current density, filament size and shape, twist pitch, RRR, mechanical properties including critical bending strain and critical tensile strain, chemical composition are constantly monitored to meet end users needs.
MgB2 wires have been used in a number of applications including high current cables, MRI magnets, fault current limiters, rotating machines, and other magnets. In this presentation, we will present the state of art of MgB2 devices and give perspective of future trends.
