Abstract Body

Spacecraft undergoing atmospheric entry must dissipate vast amounts of kinetic energy without sustaining damage. This dissipation creates large amounts of heat from which the spacecraft must be shielded. A proposed alternative to existing mechanical heat shields is to employ a strong magnetic field using HTS for thermal protection. This concept will be investigated in the HEG shock tunnel in DLR, which can recreate flow conditions for hypersonic flight configurations.
